Melissa’s love for design started at a young age as she assisted her father around their family home in Virginia with endless home improvement and design projects. Her childhood home was inspired by the style of Colonial Williamsburg, and she soon followed her family legacy earning a BBA from The College of William and Mary in 2001. After graduation, she began her career in fashion retail buying, which allowed her to mix her analytical skills with her creative talents. Realizing that her true passion was in home décor and design, in 2009 she completed her design education from The New York Institute of Art and Design. After ten years of working in the fashion buying industry, most recently at Belk Department Stores, Melissa started her interior design firm, New South Home, in 2011.
Since launching New South Home, Melissa has had the opportunity to work on countless projects ranging from small room updates to full home remodels including kitchens and bathrooms. Her experience as a fashion retail buyer taught her how to select the right furnishings for her Southern clients, creating a perfect balance between upcoming trends and classic style. Her design work has been featured multiple times in the Charlotte Observer’s Home and Design section and has won numerous accolades from her clients and peers. Her design team has won “Best of Houzz” for five years running in Customer Satisfaction based on personal reviews submitted by their clients.
When working on any design project, Melissa’s main focus is to create a comfortable and inviting space that reflects each client’s personal style. She likes to ensure that each space has a function for her clients’ lifestyle and will stand up to everyday life, especially considerate of children and pets living in the home. She excels in creating beautiful rooms from empty spaces and loves the puzzle of designing each home to fit within her client’s individual tastes, budget, and family life.
Melissa and her husband, Hayden, renovated their first townhome in Northern Virginia to sell it quickly before moving to Charlotte in 2006. Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Melissa loved the smaller city feel and Southern hospitality that Charlotte offered for a young family. Melissa and Hayden have a son and a daughter at home who are both elementary school aged. Her family has lived in their Matthews home since moving here in 2006 and they love everything about living in Charlotte and the Town of Matthews.
I was born in Atlanta and my family moved to Charlotte when I was 6 months old. I have really seen this city grow over the years! My husband comes from generations of “Matthewsians” (or Matthews natives)! We have a beautiful daughter Nicki who is 15 year old, born here in Charlotte.
I have always followed the latest fashion trends and spent most of my career working at places like JCrew, Chico’s, Old Navy and the Body Shop. After having my daughter, I went to work with my sister in law in the world of NASCAR. I spent time in a seamstress work room assisting with creating custom home décor. I have really enjoyed learning the design end of the business over the last 4 years working with Melissa! New South Home is a place that gets me excited to go to work everyday because I never know what new creative project will be next on the list!!
I have found that to start the idea of a change in your home, a great place to find your person style is from resources like Houzz, Pinterest and Instagram. Gathering rooms and styles that appeal to you helps a great designer like Melissa to get a feel for the direction you are headed! I am personally drawn to a neutral palette with clean lines. I like to keep it classic with a lean towards what is on trend!
Working as a real estate professional in the Charlotte area for almost a decade allowed Brenna to understand what people really want out of their home. Because of this it was a natural transition for her to move into the world of Interior Design. As a Designer, Brenna has worked on large scale home renovations and furnishings projects personally and professionally, and her own home has been featured online numerous times. Brenna earned her bachelor’s degree at UNC Charlotte and her design education from The New York Institute of Art and Design. She has lived in the Charlotte area for over 20 years and always strives to create a beautiful space for her husband and 2 children.
Brenna is noted for her clean and classic design aesthetic with a talent for mixing textures, patterns and colors to create a refined, but comfortable look. Her passion for design is apparent when working with her and she enjoys the puzzle of pulling together a room to fit her client’s needs and style, as well as adding in a little bit of the unexpected.
In 2012, Brenna launched her design and blogging business, Domestic Charm, to further her passion for home design, combined with her love of cooking and entertaining. She has worked with multiple clients on projects ranging from accessorizing built-ins to master bath remodels and full room designs. In 2018, she chose to merge her design business with New South Home so she could offer a larger range of furnishings to her clients to better meet their needs. Brenna enjoys working on spaces where comfort and quality are the main focus, but a little design risk is always fun! Her favorite design tools are rugs and wallpaper, two items that can bring the most “wow factor” to a space.
