Melissa Lee, Principal Designer

After graduating with a BBA from the College of William and Mary, I spent the first ten years of my professional career in the fast-paced world of retail buying. When my husband and I bought our first home in 2004, I discovered my passion for interior design after being inspired from HGTV and also from time spent helping my father with home improvement projects while I was growing up.

After moving to Charlotte, NC, I completed the Interior Design program from the New York Institute of Art and Design in 2009. With the addition of my son, I started my interior design firm, New South Design, in 2011. My first project was selecting fabrics and sewing pillows right at my dining room table and I quickly realized my love for working with fabrics to create a truly custom look for my client’s homes.

In almost six years, we have grown into New South Home, offering full service interior design and affordable custom home décor online to our customers. My favorite projects are working with families to create environments that are functional, family-friendly, and reflects my client’s personal style.

My husband and I now have lived in Charlotte for over 10 years in the same house in Matthews and we have our 7 year-old son and a 4-year old daughter at home. My personal style is a mix of traditional design with the latest trends in home decor and I love the color navy blue! I prefer to mix the colors gray and taupe to create a timeless neutral palette and layer in pops of color to allow for easy and inexpensive updates.

I was born and raised in Charlotte, so I have really seen this city grow over the years. My husband comes from a long line of “Matthewsians” (or Matthews, NC natives) from parents to grandparents. We have a beautiful 13 year-old daughter named Nicki, born here in Charlotte.
I have always followed the latest fashion trends and I spent most of my career in retail working at places like J. Crew, Gap, Chico’s and the Body Shop. I assisted my sister-in-law with her sport events company for 8 years and have alsospent time in a seamstress workroom assisting with creating custom home decor. I have really enjoyed learning the design end of the business over the past two years working with Melissa. New South Home is a place that makes me excited to go to work everyday because I never know what exciting client project or new product introductions will benext!
I am personally drawn to a neutral palette, but I have learned how to add pops of color that allows me to change up my decor easily. I think that if you find a great color story or pattern that fits your personal style, that’s a great place to start. I love watching the show “Flipping Out” on Bravo and have told Melissa from the beginning that I plan on being her “Jenny” at New South Home!
Shannon Leckinger, Design Specialist

I was born and raised in Connecticut and attended the University of South Carolina for business. After college, I returned to Connecticut where I worked in corporate marketing for 10 years. The South has always held my heart, and I happily had the opportunity to relocate with my husband and kids to North Carolina 3 years ago.

I have been home with my kids for the last 11 years, and during that time have enjoyed renovating and decorating my own homes – one of which was a Cape Cod still set in the 1970’s, complete with dark brown master bath sink & tub. I finally decided to pursue my passion of decorating and am currently pursuing my certification through the New York Institute or Art & Design. I was thrilled to start working at New South Home in September 2016.

Mixing styles is my favorite thing to do. Casual, traditional, eclectic and modern all have a place in my home. I usually start with a fun rug or print and decorate a room around that. I love accessorizing – the finishing touches are what make your room go from pretty great to WOW. Color and pattern make me happy but I definitely appreciate the popularity of a calm, neutral and refreshing space in the fast-paced world that we live in.
